How to Retire in Three Simple Steps

You must apply for retirement with SDCERA. Once you've decided to retire, follow these three simple steps:

    1.   Choose your retirement effective date. Your retirement effective date can be no earlier than the date your retirement application is received by SDCERA and no more than 60 days after that date. For example, if you want to retire on March 31, SDCERA must receive your retirement application between January 31 and March 31.

    2.   Request a Retirement Application: To request a retirement application, complete the Request for Retirement Application form and mail it to SDCERA, 2275 Rio Bonito Way, Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92108. Then, SDCERA will mail you a Retirement Packet that includes a benefit estimate based on your retirement effective date and the forms required to apply for retirement.

    3.   Complete and Return Your Retirement Application: Read carefully and complete the Retirement Application; it must be signed and dated no more than 60 days prior to your effective date of retirement. Once you complete your application, return it to SDCERA's office or mail it to SDCERA, 2275 Rio Bonito Way, Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92108, Attention: Chief Benefits Officer.

Before you receive your first retirement benefit payment, SDCERA will provide you with a letter detailing your final monthly retirement benefit amount and the factors used to calculate your benefit. Once retired, you will be paid by direct deposit on the last business day of each month.

Now, celebrate! You're retired.
