Deferred Member Beneficiary Benefits

Deferred Members are those who are no longer employed in a permanent position with by the County of San Diego (or other participating employer), have left their Member contributions on deposit with SDCERA and are not yet retired.


Deferred Member
who has not established reciprocity

Death benefit
The designated beneficiary is eligible to receive a lump-sum payment consisting of the Member's accumulated contributions plus interest.


Reciprocal deferred Member
with nonservice-connected death

Vested Members
(having at least five years of SDCERA/reciprocal service credit)
Death benefit
The eligible designated beneficiary is eligible to receive the benefits that an active SDCERA Member with a nonservice-connected death would receive. Additional benefits may be specified by the Member's current retirement system. Reciprocal systems may share in payment of the death benefit.

Nonvested Members
(having less than five years of SDCERA/reciprocal service credit)
Death benefit
The eligible designated beneficiary may receive a basic death benefit, which includes a lump-sum payment consisting of the Member's accumulated contributions plus interest. They will also receive a lump-sum payment of one month's salary; for each full year of service credit, up to six months' salary.

with service-connected death
