Active Members

An Active Member is an employee currently working in a permanent position at least 20 hours per week for the County of San Diego or an SDCERA participating employer: the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego; San Diego Local Agency Formation Commission; or San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority.

An Active Member is in both a Membership Classification and Benefit Tier.

There are two Membership Classifications:

    Safety Members: Employees in active law enforcement (e.g., Deputy Sheriffs), Probation Officers and District Attorney Investigators.

    General Members: All non-safety Members.

There are five Active Member Benefit Tiers:

    Tier I: Members who were hired before March 8, 2002 and have opted out of Tier A.

    Tier A: Members who were hired on or after March 8, 2002 and before August 28, 2009, and Tier I and Tier II Members who were converted to Tier A on March 8, 2002.

    Tier B: Members who were hired on or after August 28, 2009 and entered SDCERA
    Membership before January 1, 2013.

    Tier C: Safety Members who were hired on or after December 1, 2012 and before July 1, 2020.
                General Members who were hired on or after December 1, 2012 and before July 1, 2018.

    Tier D: Safety Members who were hired on or after July 1, 2020.
                General Members who were hired on or after July 1, 2018.

An Active Member's Benefit Tier may change if the Member:

  • Establishes reciprocity with an eligible California public employer;
  • Returns to Active SDCERA Membership status from Deferred Membership status;
  • Redeposits previously-withdrawn SDCERA contributions;
  • Moves to another SDCERA participating employer; or
  • Changes SDCERA Membership Classifications (e.g., General to Safety).
